You Call This Winter?

If I ever have to be reminded why I love to live in south Louisiana, this week is it. The northern part of the country is in lock-down cold and snow and I had to dig out my tank tops and go pull weeds in the yard.
If you're wondering what I've been up to lately - I'm putting paper work together for taxes and reworking my website. Soon, when you click on debideaux.com you will get my home page with links to the other pages of my site including this blog. I didn't realize just how rusty my html was until I started doing this. Seems like for the longest time I've just been copying and pasting. Now I've got to do it all from scratch.
The bad part is that all this "business" work is keeping me out of my studio. Not to fear though - I'll be back in there before long. Hhhmmm, maybe today. I've been having this vision that I want to play with and make real.
Again, I want to let everyone know that I will not be at the Arts Market of New Orleans in Palmer Park next week. If you are missing me please check out my Artfire shop for the latest in loose beads. There are some really cool beadsets on there now. My fave is the Key West Dreaming set

Deep, dark cobalt blue, rich, sparkling aqua and bright, fresh green combine to make me dream of sun warmed beaches and warm Caribbean waters. This set includes 3 matched pairs of dotted rounds, 11 spiral discs and 8 spacer beads ranging from 18mm to 8mm diameter to 12mm to 5mm width. The set measures 7 inches and have a 1/16 inch hole.

They are an ivory base with rose blush shard overlays. The rose blush looks very earthy and every once in a while you see a bit of a silver glint from it.

Yeah, I know it looks like 2 different sets. But it's not. One was taken indoors with the flash (top) and the other was outside in diffused sunlight (bottom). I love the way this glass changes colors. There are a total of 15 beads in this set -

I won a prize! How cool is that?!! The prize is a beautiful necklace from the flamework artist known as Helen's Harvest. I didn't even know there was a contest. I'm so thrilled to own this masterpiece.

Not only is the necklace and flameworked pendant wonderful work, the packaging was delightful. It really raised a smile to open the box and find some fragrent dried flowers strewn on top of the securely wrapped necklace. Big thanks to Helen's Harvest!

New Beads Added to My ArtFire Store

I finally used some of that Double Helix Aion frit. I used it on medium blue beads and then used a reducing flame to bring out the luster. It was difficult to get the shimmer to show in the pics. You can find this set for sale in my ArtFire shop.

I think I'll give it try with some other colors soon. But first I wanna play with the other frits.

Double Helix Frits

I recently got a sample of Double Helix frits. I decided to do a few beads with each one. I used each frit on a black, an ivory, a white and a clear bead. I did not reduce or strike them since I couldn't remember which needed reducing and which striking. I have never tried the DH frits before and have heard wonderful things about them. I have tried some of the rods though and still have a few of the discontinued Terra which I love.

The clear bead fro the Aion2 and the Triton broke before I finished them. I also added a dot of clear to most of the beads to get that magnification and to see if there is a different reaction. I like all of these and can't wait to use them in real beads.
I also got a new bead press from Zoozii's . Look for some new beads using the press and the frit. Ooo - gotta go - I've got that urge to play with fire!

It's been a busy and strange season. Some ups and some downs. This past weekend's Holiday Extravaganza at Palmer Park was my last art market of the year. I'm sorry if you missed it. My shops at Art Fire and Etsy are still open. There is no longer time to ship a purchase to you in time for Christmas unless you opt to ship overnight. For those of you in the New Orleans area please call (fiveOfourthreefourthreenineeightthreeone) or contact me and we'll work out a hand delivery. Chances are there's some reason I wanted to come to your part of town anyway.

I will not be at the January art market in Palmer Park. I will be taking the time to focus on my work and fleshing out some new ideas that the busy holiday season didn't give me time work on. I also would like to revamp my website. Yeah, yeah, I know I just re-did it. But I'm not happy with it and think it could use a little tweeking. All suggestions are welcome. My idea for now is to put my blog on its own page and have a "splash" page for my home page with links to the other pages. I didn't used to like splash pages but now that I'm using so many other websites (blogger, picasa, artfire, etsy) it seems like a good idea. I promise not to put automatic music on my site!

My wish is for a wonderful peaceful Christmas and safe Holiday Season to all. I'm still hoping for Whirled Peas.

Arts Market Holiday Extravaganza!

Saturday, December 20th and Sunday, December 21st from 10 am to 4 pm, the Arts Market of New Orleans in Palmer Park - corner of Carrollton and Claiborne Avenues (the final stop of the St. Charles streetcar).
Make note that this month the arts market is a week early and will be for two days, both Saturday and Sunday, so that you may take advantage of the locally made art in time for the holiday season.
I have lots of new pieces to offer including several more of the ever popular turtles.

With youngsters in mind I made several cupcakes and even an ice cream cone. And some stockings to hang from your ears instead of the mantle. LOL

Fresh from the Flames - It's a Herd o' Turtles!

When I was a kid getting us loaded into the car and ready to hit the road was always quite a production so when Mom finally put the car in gear and hit the road she would always proudly declare, "And we're off! ...like a herd of turtles." So this week I dedicate "Fresh From the Flames" and a new "Herd O' Turtles to my Mom.

Arts Market of New Orleans has moved this weekend's market to Sunday, November 30 due to rain predicted on the scheduled Saturday market. It is still in Palmer Park and still to be from 10am to 4pm.
Look for me in my usual place at the corner where the four sidewalks meet.

Giving Thanks for my Art

I love flamework so much. I think that translates to my work. When I count my blessing, of which I have many, I will be sure to add in the fact that I am a flamework artist.
I am endlessly thankful that I am given the time to devote to my flame by my loving and beloved husband, Bob.
I am grateful that I live in a city that worships art and artists and thus enables me to sell my art so that I may feed my addiction for more glass.
I am indebted to all the wonderful glass artists that have shared their love and knowledge of the marriage of glass and flame on the forums of the internet.

Hello Everyone - just a real quick blog to anyone that is missing me - My computer has died on me. I'm hoping to be back online real soon but for now I'm staying in touch through my husband's 'puter and shopping for a new "lifeline".

So Many Social Networks, So Little Time...

Holy tomoly, I'm not sure I can keep up with just the social networks I belong to much less all of them.
Let's see - most recent is Twitter - you can see a little example in the sidebar to the right, after the "Upcoming Shows" listing.
I'm asking myself, "when will I find time to actually do anything to twitter about if I'm constantly updating on all these social networks?"
I've been on My Space for some time now. I just signed up for FaceBook today.

While in Grants Pass, Oregon this past week, Hubby and I got a chance to tour Fire Mountain Gems. Our tour guide, Jessica, took us all through the facility. I am quite impressed at the enormity of the operation. I did not realize that there is no actual store front. That is what we were looking for. It's mail order (phone and internet) only.
The highlight of the visit was meeting the acknowledged "Queen of Jewelry Design", Marlynn McNutt. Her compliments for beads in the bracelet I was wearing was enough to make me gush like a schoolgirl. I was walking on air the rest of the day.

Marlynn made me aware of Fire Mountain Gem's Circle of Hope Breast Cancer Awareness necklace, a way to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Since she seemed to especially like my curly disc beads I will be making several of these to donate for the necklace for 2009.
I think that what has left the biggest impression of all is the fact that the employees at Fire Mountain Gems seemed to be content and enjoy their jobs. Everyone was open and friendly, glad to see us and not a single grump in the bunch. To me that is one of the best signs of a well run company that values people not just profit. That is where I like to see my money go.

Getting Ready for the Holidays

Wow, I can't believe that Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming upon us already. I'm having a hard time getting the mood started but I will. I've got some cool color combinations coming up. I will be making a few holiday specific pieces but I was thinking of going more with the colors of the season and making pieces that will go nicely after the holidays too.

This Saturday, October 25 from 10am to 4pm in Palmer Park on the corner of S. Carrollton and S. Claiborne - The Art Market of New Olreans presented by the Arts Council of New Orleans.

Again the Arts Council has a grand entertainment planned for the day including a Voodoo Priestess and not one, but two theater groups to wander the market and keep us all smiling.

I've made lots of new shiny baubles including several large sets that I will be holding in reserve for the designers out there. I'm having a really hard time resisting the urge to use these myself.

Donations to Charitable Auctions and Freret Market

I thought I'd post pics of some of the donations I'm making to some of the charitable organizations this festival season.
This one is for the PoBoy Festival - Sunday, November 23, 2008. I will also have a booth at this fest. This will be auctioned at the patron party the night before the festival.

I'm calling it "Low Cal, Low Fat, Low Carb PoBoy" and it is. LOL It has been wired up to attach to a lamp/fan pull but I wired it on pure silver with Swarovski crystals so it will convert easily and nicely to a pendant.
This next one is simply "Red Fish" and it has been donated to the folks at Poydras Home to auction at their patron party on Friday evening, November 7, 2008. Red Fish is also wired up to hang as a lamp/fan pull and can easily switch jobs to a pendant.

If you can't make it to the patron parties, please come and visit my booth at the art fairs. While no two pieces are ever the same, I often make more than one of a particular design.

You can find me this Saturday, October 4 12noon to 5pm at the Freret Street Market. My booth will be near the front of the community center just past Zeus' Place. Booth #64. I've made lots more of those candy corn earrings. And am lowering the prices on them to $18 a pair. I will take another $2 off for anyone mentioning reading my blog.
The next Art Market of New Orleans in Palmer Park is Saturday, October 25 10am to 4pm. It's the last market before Halloween and I've gots lots of Halloween baubles and have marked them all down. The offer of $2 off for anyone mentioning reading about the market in my blog will be valid then too.

Yep, you guessed it! I'm getting in the Halloween mood. The heart upper left, next to the orange cat, has a skull and roses on it. cute. The Dragon came out quite well but his nose is more piggy than dragonish. Some of the skulls and bones will be wired with silver and crystals but some are ready to hang as they are.

Gustav Cancels Art Market of New Orleans

I've finally heard that we will be canceling the Art Market of New Orleans in Palmer Park. The next market will be Saturday, September 27, 2008 from 10am to 4pm. This is our regularly scheduled market. I've got lots of new pieces - finished jewelry and loose beads. I've also taken a few of my older pieces apart and revamped them.
I'm going to start working on some Halloween pieces next. Anyone that likes my hollow beads will love the hollow pumpkins I'm making. Those kitties I made last year are rollicking around in my head too. Please let me know if you have a special color you'd like your kitty. You know I'll be making some black ones.
